What We're Reading

What we’re reading – The Kingdom by Amanda Stevens

Hi Everyone –

Lisa here… 🙂 I’m packing for the RT Booklover’s Convention in Kansas City, but I just finished a really great Urban Fantasy book and I had to share…

Have you read the Graveyard Queen Series yet?

BLURB –

Deep in the shadowy foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains lies a dying town…

My name is Amelia Gray. They call me The Graveyard Queen. I’ve been commissioned to restore an old cemetery in Asher Falls, South Carolina, but I’m coming to think I have another purpose here.

Why is there a cemetery at the bottom of Bell Lake? Why am I drawn time and again to a hidden grave I’ve discovered in the woods? Something is eating away at the soul of this town—this withering kingdom—and it will only be restored if I can uncover the truth.

I find the blurb haunting and it really matches the tone of the book!  It’s been a long time since I’ve read something that I NEEDED to know what was going to happen. I read my Kindle every free second.

Instead of your typical UF kick-ass heroine, we have a heroine who is a thinker and a loner and she’s vulnerable. And this book is SUPER spooky!  I loved the atmosphere of the town and you get that immediately in chapter one.  The hero was also very complex and interesting…

The book kept me guessing until the end and instead of “creatures”, this one had evil spirits and a cursed town and many secrets. Dark secrets!

This is the first book I’ve read in the series so it definitely stands alone, but I’m probably going to go back and read the others…

So what are you reading?

Lisa

  1. I loved, loved, love the Graveyard Queen series! Amanda Stevens really has a good sense of atomosphere and mood. Not to mention the ability to write fantastic heroes and heroines.

Right now I am reading through Susanna Kearsley’s books, which aren’t the typical paranormal romance, but rather paranormalish love stories involving ghosts, time travel, and inherited memory.
