Have you watched BITTEN on Syfy yet?
The show is based on Kelley Armstrong’s NYT Best Selling Women of the
Otherworld Series and I’m really enjoying it overall, however not all her readers feel the same.
You see they’re deviating from the books. It started out in episode two when a minor character died that wasn’t who we book lovers were expecting…
And last week in episode 7 a major character died and Kelley received so many emails she actually posted a blog to remind people that she has nothing to do with the writing on the television show.
It interesting to note, that she sold the rights for the company to make the television, in part, because readers have been asking for tv and movies for years.
Now that it’s there and different, are they still happy it’s on tv? I guess only time will tell.
This isn’t a new phenomenon. HBO’s True Blood turned a HUGE spotlight onto Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series, bringing new fans to her books, while long time readers of her books cringed as the HBO series deviated from the novel storylines.
And coming soon, Neil Gaiman’s 
AMAZING book, American Gods will be a new series on HBO, but this time it’ll be different.
Neil Gaiman is writing the script! Wow!
So will readers be treated to a show that remains true to the book?
I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

In the meantime, I wonder how you feel about it?
I typically view TV and movies as a new creation from the books. Many times the writers have ideas for characters that are different from the books we read, but not necessarily bad, just not what we expected.
But how about you? Do you ache for the movie or television series and then cringe when it’s different than the books?
And do you think it’ll make a difference to have the novelist also writing the scripts for episodes?

Lisa you know I follow a lot of books to movie ( not vamipie academy though because I only read bloodlines) I love Bitten. Waiting on Divergant and my son told me not to watch the new percy Jackson, we both read the book and the 13 year old told me do not watch it mom it will make you mad. I thought immoral increments was ok but off for the book a lot. but jonhtan rhymes myers was worth it.
I love Bitten too! Even though it’s deviating from the book, I really like the characters and the “world”… I’m okay with the plot changing up… 🙂

I loved Harris’ book, we watched True Blood but after — the second season — we stopped cause it was too sensationalized.
I haven’t read Bitten but started watching the show based on comments on this blog site. I’m glad to hear it’s not like the book. Sounds like True Blood all over again.
We find the acting stilted, the direction boring and the plot holes large Still taping it but not sure for how much longer
I don’t know what she did in the book, but here the MC is going to have to tell the boy friend the truth or lose him. And he’s going to find out anyway re: the video

Well you’ve got the triangle between Elena and Clayton and Phillip in the book too, but in the book you can’t figure out what’s up between Clay and Elena until much later when you discover Clay bit her… In the show they let you know that very early. Not sure why…
But I’m enjoying the show. I love the woman playing Elena and Clay and Jeremy have grown on me… 🙂
The book is called Bitten too… It’s well worth a read! 🙂

I personally have a very difficult time watching a TV show or movie if it deviates too much from the book. I would rather just read…..
I love reading too! 🙂 Sometimes I do think it’s fun to be able to “see” the characters I love, but you do have to remember it’s no longer the book so there are often changes…

I personally have a difficult time watching a TV show or movie if it diverges too much from the book(s). I would rather just read the book again. I watched season one of True Blood, my primary thought was “wtf? That bears no resemblance to the books!”
I guess I have come to expect television to deviate but movies to remain more true to the source. Having said that there are some things that work on paper that just don’t work on screen – be it big or small..there was a lot of Harry Potter stuff left out of the movies. As for Bitten, if they want to send Clay to my house, I’ll have a little discussion (after I’m done with him, of course)
ROTFL!!! Yeah I’ll admit that everytime Clay says Darlin’ my knees get weak… LOL

I started watching Bitten after you posted about it and I’ve really enjoyed the series so far. I’ve not read the books so it doesn’t matter to me how far the writers stray from the books.

LOL! I’d read all of the Sookie Stackhouse books and love True Blood on TV… but it doesn’t upset me that the writers have strayed so far from the books… I like both!

For me, it depends on the books and how the adaptation strays. If the characters stay true to their personalities, I can usually watch just fine. When they changes the personalities, though, I have to stop.
The Legend of the Seeker was based on my favorite book series ever and they changed everything about the main characters. I wouldn’t have minded the major plot changes, but the characters are what I love in stories.
It has been awhile since I read Bitten, so I’m not totally positive what changes have been made to the plot (& I’m grateful). I can tell that Elena, Clay, Jeremey, etc… are pretty true to character. I’m a bit disappointed that you-know-who died, but it does make for good television (the drama). I like what Kelley said in her blog post, “This will be my story as reimagined by others.” I can’t find the exact wording of the other quote, but she said something to the effect of, “Don’t think of this as Bitten the book on TV. Think of it as a re-imagining of it.”
Yes her blog post was great about using her “world” but it’s their story, not hers… I really appreciate that Clay, Elena, Jeremy and Nick are all very true the character in the books… 🙂

I really don’t like to watch tv series or movies made from books I have read, as I miss those things I loved. Like The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, made into the tv series The Seeker. I really do wonder why the stories have to be so different from the books I loved. Of course I realize you can’t put the whole 8 hour book in a 2 hour movie or something, but why change the story if you bought it because you loved it.
Oh wow, thanks for the heads up on American Gods coming to TV. Looking forward to that.
